Marble Tile FAQ: Buying, Samples, Variation & Care
Answers to common questions about marble tile, finishes, natural variation, samples, suitability, ordering and care from Big Apple Marble.
Updated October 16, 2026. This is general buying and care guidance; the requirements for a specific installation depend on the exact product, setting system, location and applicable building rules.
Is every piece of marble tile identical?
No. Marble is natural stone, so color, veining, movement and small surface characteristics can vary from the sample and product photography. Variation is part of the material. Review current images, inspect a sample where available and discuss lot-level expectations before a larger order.
What is the difference between honed and polished marble?
Honed marble has a lower-sheen surface, while polished marble has a more reflective finish. The finish changes how the stone looks and how marks or wear may appear. Finish alone does not prove that a product is suitable for a particular floor, wall or wet-area application; confirm the exact product and project requirements with a qualified installer.
Can marble tile be used on floors, walls or in a shower?
It depends on the specific tile, finish, format, substrate, setting materials and location. Do not assume that every marble tile or mosaic is appropriate for every application. Check the product details and ask your installer and setting-material manufacturer to confirm suitability, slip considerations, waterproofing and local code requirements.
Why should I order a sample?
A sample helps you view the stone's color, finish and scale in your own lighting and next to other project materials. A small sample cannot represent every piece or the full variation of a shipment, so use it as one decision input rather than a guarantee of the final lot.
What should I compare on a marble mosaic product page?
Confirm the named stone or stone combination, finish, pattern, listed sheet or piece dimensions, coverage, price unit and current availability. For installation, also confirm mesh or mounting details, joint expectations, setting material, grout and sealing requirements with your installer.
How much extra tile should I order?
There is no single percentage that is correct for every project. Room geometry, layout, pattern, cuts, breakage, future repairs and the amount of natural variation you plan to select around all affect the quantity. Have the installer calculate the order from field measurements and the chosen layout before purchase.
Does marble need to be sealed?
Sealing needs depend on the stone, finish, location, exposure and sealer system. A sealer can improve stain resistance but does not make natural stone stain-proof. Ask the installer or sealer manufacturer for product-specific preparation, compatibility and maintenance instructions.
How should marble and other natural stone be cleaned?
Start with a neutral cleaner intended for natural stone, use a soft cloth or mop and follow the cleaner manufacturer's directions. Avoid acidic products such as vinegar or lemon on marble, limestone and travertine, and avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch some finishes. See our Care & Maintenance page and the Natural Stone Institute care guidance.
What should I verify before ordering tile online?
Check the exact product name, stone, finish, dimensions, price unit, coverage, current availability, sample option, shipping method and the current return and damage procedures. Read the product page and Return Policy before ordering. For a larger project, ask questions before purchase rather than relying only on photos.
Where should I start browsing?
Start with marble tile for field formats, marble mosaics for classic patterns, waterjet mosaics for decorative designs or travertine tile for current travertine options.
